In Santiago Chile, the Chaiten volcano was put under a red alert. Up until May 2008, the volcano had not been active for 9,000 years. In fact, the Chaiten volcano's activity had been decreasing, but on January 21st, the volcano's activity began to pick up. From then on, researchers saw an increase of seismic activity for three weeks and decided that it was time to inform the public. The red alert was enacted in order to protect the tourists because the red alert warns that there is a possibility of eruption. As a result of this increasing activity, the Chaiten volcano has been emitting gas and there has been rumblings as deep as 1.2 to 5 feet into the ground around the volcano.

Wow, that's really interesting. I can't believe a volcano would show activity after 9,000 years. That's pretty cool.
